Introducing G.P.L.R.

The Groupement philatélique régional Languedoc-Roussillon brings together the philatelic associations (members of the F.F.A.P. – Fédération Française des Associations Philatéliques) of the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

History of Groupement philatélique Languedoc-Roussillon

The first philatelic societies in our region were created between 1920 and 1930. They quickly realized the benefits of joining the “Fédération des Sociétés Philatéliques Françaises”.

By 1939, some ten associations had joined forces in this federation, whose motto has always been: “Unite and Educate”. The federal delegate at the time was Robert Freydier, and this first stage ended with the national exhibition in Montpellier in May 1939.

Very quickly, the war and the division of France into two zones deprived our societies of their leaders, who had gone to the front, been taken prisoner or unfortunately disappeared, and distanced them from the federation in particular. Robert Freydier (federal delegate) tried to maintain cohesion between all the societies in the southern zone, thanks to the magazine “le bulletin philatélique du Midi”, which provided associations with the necessary information.

A committee was first set up in January 1953, under the impetus of Commandant Rouffiol, President of the Association Philatélique du Languedoc (Narbonne) and Robert Fabre, President of the A.P.B. (Béziers). The societies of Carcassonne, Béziers, Narbonne and Perpignan joined forces to form a regional committee with the aim of promoting philately in the region, by coordinating philatelic events. Thus were born the regional exhibitions.

In 1955, the committee expanded to include the Montpellier philatelic association, followed in 1959 by the Nîmes philatelic association, and finally in 1964, at the Bessèges “Stamp Day”, the societies of Alès, Bagnols, Bessèges, La Grand-Combe, Uzès and Les Vans.

The union of Upper and Lower Languedoc had been achieved.

In 1969, at the Perpignan congress, bylaws were drawn up. After their transformation in 1973, they were to give birth to the “Groupement régional” as the federation had wished at the national congress in Saint-Brieuc, with Fernand Charmasson as its president.
